The trick to using a gimbal is to fit them correctly and then use your waist and hips to pump the rod up during the battle. This alleviates all the stress placed on your arms and back when fighting a fish without a gimbal.

Place the rod bucket around your waist and place the butt of the rod into the rod bucket, and your pain will go away, making it easier to fight the fish.
